Laboratory studies were conducted to evaluate flumetsulam adsorption and mobility in seven Mississippi soils of different organic matter content, pH, and texture. Adsorption isotherms were determined for all soils using a 1:1 (soil: water) technique. In six of seven soils, Freundlich n constants were close to unity, suggesting a partitioning-like adsorption mechanism for flumetsulam. Mobility was examined using packed soil columns. 14C-flumetsulam recoveries in leachate ranged from 1 to 70% and were influenced by both organic matter content and soil pH. However, the effects of organic matter content and soil pH were not independent. Consequently, clear relationships between flumetsulam mobility and either organic matter content or soil pH were not established across all soils. However, among soils of similar pH (7.5 ± 0.3), mobility decreased linearly (R2 = 0.75) as organic matter content increased from 0.7 to 3.6%. Across soils with similar organic matter content (3.9 ± 0.3%), mobility increased linearly (R2 = 0.98) as soil pH increased from 5.3 to 7.2. Net adsorption constants (Kd) provided a more accurate assessment of flumetsulam mobility across all soils than Koc.

Tall fescue vegetative filter strips 0.5 to 4.0 m wide were evaluated for their ability to reduce losses of metolachlor, metribuzin, and runoff (water and sediment) in conventionally tilled soybean. Differences in the parameters studied were significant between filter and no filter strips, regardless of filter strip width. Two days after treatment, metribuzin concentration in runoff from the unfiltered treatment was 231 ng ml−1; filter strips reduced this amount to 119 ng ml−1 or less. Similar trends were observed with metolachlor, with concentrations of 1,009 ng ml−1 from the unfiltered, whereas filter strips of any width reduced this to 523 ng ml−1 or less. Metribuzin loss during the growing season was 41 g ai ha−1, or 9.8% of the amount applied when no filter strip was present. The addition of a filter strip, regardless of width, reduced cumulative metribuzin losses to 11 g ha−1 or less. Similar results were noted with metolachlor. Filter strips, regardless of width, reduced cumulative runoff and sediment loss at least 46 and 83%, respectively.

Field research was conducted in 1994 and 1995 to monitor the dissipation of flumetsulam in five Mississippi soils for a period of 16 wk. These soils allowed evaluation of flumetsulam persistence across three soil series with a relatively constant soil pH of 6.0, as well as across three soils of varied pH from 6.0 to 7.6 within a constant soil series. Bioavailability was determined with a rice root length bioassay. Predicted half-lives ranged from 20 to 26 d in 1994 and from 23 to 46 d in 1995. Persistence decreased with increasing cumulative rainfall and decreasing organic matter content (within a range of 1.2 to 3.5%). Soil pH had no measurable effect on flumetsulam persistence.

Research was conducted in 1994 and 1995 to evaluate the field mobility of flumetsulam in three soils of varied texture and organic matter content but constant pH (pH = 6.0 ± 0.1). Flumetsulam was monitored to a depth of 122 cm at 28, 56, and 84 days after treatment (DAT). Flumetsulam concentrations were determined by cotton bioassay, with separate standard curves for various soil–depth combinations. Following a preemergence application of flumetsulam at 224 g ai ha−1, the herbicide was primarily limited to the upper 8 cm of soil, regardless of soil type, year, or DAT. Exceptions to this typically occurred following substantial rainfall amounts early in the season. Beyond 28 DAT, no significant concentrations of flumetsulam were detected below 15 cm. Results from this research suggest that leaching is not a significant route of flumetsulam dissipation in the field.

The clinical and neuropathological findings in two infants with congenital nemaline myopathy are described. One patient presented at birth with severe hypotonia, respiratory failure and contractures and died shortly after the neonatal period. The other presented at age two months with hypotonia and, following a period of clinical stability, died at age seven months from respiratory failure. Pathological findings in the fatal neonatal case revealed numerous rod bodies in lingual, pharyngeal, diaphragm and limb muscles, correlating with clinical findings. Significant, but less rod body involvement was found in the diaphragm and limb muscles of the second patient. Although a neural basis has been suggested for this disorder, no abnormalities were found in the central nervous system or in the peripheral nerves of these two severely affected patients.
